Kara Mycek Kara earned her masters degree in Dance/Movement Therapy from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. She is a Board Certified Dance/Movement Therapist and licensed New York State Creative Arts Therapist. In her career as a Dance/Movement Therapist, she has enjoyed opportunities working with diverse populations in settings such as: community mental health, adult inpatient acute psychiatric care, adolescent day treatment, adult social day care, early intervention preschool, and in nursing homes. She is grateful for the experiences in working with a wide range of children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. She has worked with individuals suffering from anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, adjustment disorders, loss/bereavement, childhood behavior/developmental issues, neurodevelopmental disorders, dementia, Alzheimer’s, physical disabilities, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Kara believes in a holistic, humanistic approach that utilizes the creative process and therapeutic relationship to help others reach their fullest potentials.


Training & Credentials
In order to become a dance/movement therapist, one must complete a two-year masters program from a credentialed program, including two years of intensive internship training, and completion of a thesis. Post graduate work, dance/movement therapists must complete 1,500 supervised clinical hours, and pass two examinations in order to receive a license to practice as a creative arts therapist in New York State.

To work independently in private practice, Dance/Movement Therapists must additionally apply for Board Certification (BC-DMT). This process includes: completing 3,640 clinical hours, passing two written exams, and completing 48 hours of supervision with a Board Certified Dance/Movement Therapist.
